They Forgot the Bread
September 30, 2018 | Tyson Herald
The human mind is fascinating. We can remember our favorite sports stats or other mindless trivia answers, but for some reason I can't tell you what I had for dinner last Tuesday night. Our ability to attain and retain knowledge has moved humanity forward in some incredible ways.
Humans are also incredibly forgetful. Especially when it comes to the promises and provisions of God. The nation of Israel forgot God's provision while wandering in the desert after being delivered from slavery in Egypt. The disciples often forgot what Jesus had done for them and they were eye witnesses or even participants in his miracles.
Mark 8:14-21 records one such account. Jesus had just miraculously fed 4,000 people after he had already fed 5,000 people. He grew impatient with the pharisees and went to get away with the disciples. In their haste to get going the disciples forgot the bread to eat. They thought Jesus was frustrated with them about forgetting the bread. His warning was ultimately about the influence of the Pharisees and Herod.
Jesus goes on to patiently remind the disciples of his constant provision (vs. 18-20) They were worried about the forgotten bread when they had the one who multiplied bread with them. Which made me think, "What has God promised or provided that I've forgotten?" What has God done for you that you forgot?
The time that he provided a job for you?
The time God healed your loved one from cancer?
The time God brought just the right person into your life, at just the right time?
The time God forgave you when you didn't think you could forgive yourself?
The time God protected you from harm?
The times God has blessed you with far more than you deserve?
The time God used you to help someone else?
